Transportation
Italy has an extensive transportation network. High-speed trains (like Trenitalia's Frecciarossa and Italo) connect major cities efficiently. Regional trains and buses serve smaller towns. Renting a car is a great option for exploring the countryside, but driving in the historic centers of large cities is not recommended due to traffic-restricted zones (ZTL).
Specialty cuisine
Italian cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its regional diversity and high-quality ingredients. From risotto and polenta in the north, to pasta and Florentine steak in the center, and pizza and fresh seafood in the south, each region offers its own distinct specialties. Don't miss out on the local wines, espresso, and artisanal gelato.
Etiquette and Tipping
- Tipping is not obligatory in Italy but is appreciated for good service. A service charge (servizio) or cover charge (coperto) is often included in the bill at restaurants. It is customary to leave a few euros or round up the bill as a gesture of appreciation.
- A handshake is a common greeting. When entering a shop or restaurant, it is polite to say 'Buongiorno' (Good morning) or 'Buonasera' (Good evening).
