Transportation
Hungary has a well-developed public transport network, especially in Budapest, which features a metro, trams, and buses. The state-owned railway company, MÁV, connects major towns and cities across the country. Long-distance buses are also a popular option for intercity travel.
Specialty cuisine
Hungarian cuisine is known for its rich flavors, with a generous use of paprika. The signature dish is Goulash, a hearty stew. Other popular dishes include Fisherman's Soup (Halászlé), Chicken Paprikash (Csirkepaprikás), and chimney cake (Kürtőskalács). The country is also famous for its wines, especially the sweet dessert wines from the Tokaj region.
Etiquette and Tipping
- Tipping is customary in Hungary, usually around 10-15% of the bill. Some restaurants may include a service charge, so it's best to check the bill first. It is polite to hand the tip directly to the staff rather than leaving it on the table.
- A firm handshake with eye contact is a common greeting. In formal situations, use titles (Mr. 'Úr' / Ms. 'Hölgyem') followed by the surname. Among friends, a kiss on each cheek (usually right then left) is common.
