Transportation
Intercity travel in Ghana is primarily done by coach buses and shared minibuses called 'tro-tros.' Within cities, taxis and ride-sharing apps are popular. Renting a car is also an option, though it is recommended to be comfortable with local driving conditions.
Specialty cuisine
Ghanaian cuisine is known for its flavorful soups and stews, often served with a starchy staple like fufu (pounded cassava and plantain), banku (fermented corn and cassava dough), or jollof rice (a spicy one-pot tomato-based rice dish). Grilled tilapia and kelewele (spicy fried plantains) are popular street foods.
Etiquette and Tipping
- Tipping is not mandatory in Ghana but is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a tip of 5-10% is customary. For tour guides and drivers, a tip is expected.
- Greetings are very important in Ghanaian culture. Great importance is placed on taking the time to inquire about a person's well-being and their family. It is considered polite to greet and exchange items with your right hand.
