Transportation
Transportation in Bhutan is primarily by road. The most common way for tourists to travel is through a pre-arranged tour which includes a private vehicle and driver. Public buses connect major towns, but services can be infrequent. Domestic flights are available between Paro and the eastern and central parts of the country.
Specialty cuisine
Bhutanese cuisine is known for its spicy flavors, with chili peppers often used as a vegetable rather than a seasoning. The national dish is 'ema datshi', a spicy stew made with chili peppers and cheese. Red rice is a staple of the Bhutanese diet, often served with various meat and vegetable curries. Traditional beverages include butter tea (suja) and rice wine (ara).
Etiquette and Tipping
- Tipping is not mandatory in Bhutan but is a common practice and greatly appreciated for tour guides, drivers, and trekking staff. In hotels and restaurants, tipping is at your discretion, but a small amount for good service is always appreciated.
- A traditional greeting is to bow slightly with your hands clasped together. Using the honorific 'la' at the end of sentences shows respect, especially to elders and those in a higher position. It is customary to remove your shoes when entering a temple or someone's home.
