Transportation
Intercity travel in Bolivia is primarily done by long-distance buses. For more remote areas, shared minibuses and trucks are common. Domestic flights connect major cities. Renting a car is an option, but experience with rugged terrain is advisable.
Specialty cuisine
Bolivian cuisine is a fusion of Spanish and indigenous flavors. Key dishes include Salteñas (a savory baked pastry), Sopa de Maní (peanut soup), and Pique a lo Macho (a large plate of beef, sausage, fries, and vegetables). Be sure to try Api, a sweet traditional drink made from purple corn.
Etiquette and Tipping
- In restaurants, a tip of around 10% is customary but not mandatory. For tour guides and drivers, a tip is a common way to show appreciation.
- A handshake is a common greeting. In rural areas, addressing people by their title (Señor, Señora) is considered polite.
