Transportation
Transportation in Bahrain is primarily car-based. Renting a car and using taxis (including ride-hailing apps) are very common. A public bus network serves the main towns but can be less convenient for tourists. Given the country's small size, travel between key areas on the main island is relatively quick.
Specialty cuisine
Bahraini cuisine is influenced by Arabic, Persian, Indian, and Western flavors. Machboos, a spiced rice dish with meat or fish, is considered the national dish. Other popular dishes include grilled kebabs (tikka), hummus, and a roasted lamb dish called Qoozi. Traditional Arabic coffee (gahwa) is an important part of hospitality.
Etiquette and Tipping
- In restaurants, a tip of 10-15% is customary if a service charge is not included in the bill. For taxi drivers, rounding up the fare is sufficient.
- Greetings often begin with 'As-salamu alaykum' (Peace be upon you) and a handshake. When interacting with the opposite sex, it is best to wait for them to extend their hand first.
